It’s not by chance that another version of this head can be found
on the starting page of Creative Creatures. While in the other
version—a ballpoint pen drawing in blue and black—the head is lacking
its skullcap, its lid if you will, I changed that for the small
version on my starting page. When I had scanned the paper sketch I
was determined to create a completely hybrid work, inseparably
intertwining the work on paper with the parts done with the PC with
the same drawing technique, so that in the end a complete skull would
result, preserving its original character and at the same time
creating a new whole. As much of a grey bony skull as this head may
be, I always see it as an essentially calm and friendly figure, as
grotesque as it is relaxed, with sadness and pain in the back of the
head, and contradictions between its ears, as well. But all in all it
is laidback and looking forward. The minimal use of color is well
embedded in the structured grey of the background, so no further
visual relations need to be created.
